Web 2.0 - What is it, why is it important?

This first Internet, we now call the "Read Only Web" because users could only read information, web sites pushed information out and did not invite participation.
Then in the late 1990's, some websites emerged, such as ebay and Amazon that allowed users do more, respectively on ebay people could buy and sell items, and on Amazon those interested in writing book reviews were able to do so. People using the web were now invited to participate on the web, their interaction was encouraged through the ability to comment, and ask questions. This was the beginning of Web 2.0, a term was coined by Tim O'Reilly September 2005 when he wrote the following article "What is Web 2.0: Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software."
